Renaissance Sergeant

In the world of constant scrutiny, lack of support for police, and the "re-imagining" of the police, the ability to attract and retain the exceptional men and women needed to do the difficult work of policing has become extremely daunting.  Now it is more important than ever to have exceptional leadership in policing.  Unfortunately, this has been an area that has been mostly ignored in recent years and has suffered as a result.  It is time to bring the Art and Humanity back to police leadership.

It is time for Renaissance Sergeant.

Welcome to the Renaissance

Renaissance Sergeant is the idea of building training, mentorship, and community for police leaders in a format that is easily accessible and affordable to any leader that wants to level up their skills and and knowledge.

Renaissance Sergeant is a place leaders can continue to visit to see what their peers are doing, what the best practices are, and how they can lead and grow the people around them.  No one is ever going to remember, or care, about the policy you wrote, the project you led, or the awards you received.  They will remember the time you spent working with them, mentoring them, and helping them grow.  This will be passed on to the next generation and be your true legacy.  This is what it means to be a Renaissance Sergeant.

Why the Renaissance

Renaissance is French for "rebirth".  The Oxford English Dictionary gives the definition of Renaissance as "Any revival, or period of marked improvement and new life, in art, literature, etc.".  The idea of Renaissance Sergeant is the revival of the Art and Humanity that is required to be an effective police leader.  In recent times, this idea has fallen by the wayside as the focus of police leadership has seemingly left the idea of leading people behind in favor arbitrary metrics and inhuman processes.  We believe that truly exceptional performance comes from bringing the Art and Humanity to Professional Police Supervision to create the leadership, community, and mentoring relationships where growth can flourish and making it accessible to all all leaders.  No matter the size of agency or budget of an agency, Renaissance Sergeant will strive to make training and mentoring available to any any leader who wants to grow.  This will not occur in a vacuum and we need to actively work together and become the community......the rebirth.....The Renaissance.

My Journey

I have spent more than three decades in policing, with more than two decades of that as a sergeant.  I spent 34 years, with 20 as a sergeant, at a mid-sized agency that had just shy of 250 sworn when I left.  During my career there I had many assignments as both a line officer and a sergeant.  These included two tours at a multi-agency drug task force with one as a supervisor for 5 years.  I spent time as a fugitive investigation, worked in a pro-active, problem solving unit, and spent 4 years as a supervisor of a Crime Scene and Digital Forensics unit.  During my time as a line officer and sergeant, about half of my career was on Patrol and the other half in specialized units.  I was a SWAT member and Team Leader for 7 years, a Field Training Officer for 2 years, a Firearms Instructor for 10 years, and a UAS pilot for 6 years.  Mixed in to this was a good dose of Policy and Procedure writing, Budgeting at the City, Agency, and Unit level, creating training programs, growing units, and all the back office administrative tasks that come with running police agencies.  I also had the amazing opportunity to mentor and coach many very talented and intelligent officers and work with them as their careers progressed.  I was very fortunate to have several very talented supervisors work with, guide, and mentor me to where I am today.  Around 2016, I had a life altering experience as my daughter became seriously ill.  To get her the best medical care, we moved my wife and daughter to Ohio, while I stayed in Colorado.  This lasted nearly 4 years with their return home at the end of 2020.  This event, my love of teaching and coaching, and being at the end of my career caused a lot of pondering about what I should do next.  My middle son was an Emergency Dispatcher and had just become a police officer at the agency I had spent my adult life at and my oldest son was a firefighter in the same city.  My wife and I made the decision to move to a nearby small town and I took a job there as a Sergeant so I could recapture time with my family, teach and coach at an agency full of young, smart officers and sergeants, and leave my former agency and city I grew up in for my kids to protect.  Ironically, as my daughter's health got better she became a Emergency Dispatcher at my former agency and now dispatchers her brothers.  As time went on and all were involved the incidents that both build you and scar you, I had to wonder who was the leadership that would take care of my kids.  I had a part in growing up with, working with and mentoring these leaders and that gave me the answer to "what's next?"  I had to take take what I have blessed to learn and experience over my career and share it.  Not just with my new, smaller agency, but with any Police Supervisor, Sergeant, or leader that wanted to level up their skills.  I knew I needed to focus on building a community that would be accessible and affordable for any leader.  This is how Renaissance Sergeant was born.  Please join me as I build this community to share experiences and bring the Art and Humanity back to police supervision.
